Why Kyphoplasty for Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures?

Overview

In this study, we report the results of our unilateral kyphoplasty procedure in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures resistant to medical treatment. Retrospective analysis of radiological images and functional evaluation were performed on 32 patients who had undergone percutaneous kyphoplasty (KF) at osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in Hatay Mustafa Kemal University (HMKU) Department of Neurosurgery between 2022 and 2024. Lateral direct radiographs measured the anterior, middle, and posterior vertebral wall heights and kyphosis angle. The Cobb technique was used to calculate the kyphosis angle. Patients’ preoperative and early postoperative pain, as well as pain in the first postoperative month, were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Our patients’ average VAS preoperatively is 8.56, which reduces by 31.54% in the early postoperative period to 5.83. At postoperative month 1, 96% of patients had a 92.64% decrease in the mean VAS score, averaging 0.63 (preoperative, 8). Anterior and middle vertebral wall height increased significantly compared to preoperative and postoperative vertebral heights, but height in the posterior wall did not change significantly. Balloon kyphoplasty is a safe, convenient, minimally invasive procedure that can be carried out comfortably under local anesthesia or conscious sedation. Further, it is a very effective method of treating pain, which prevents patients from fully living their lives and being subservient to spinal alignment.
