Institutional and Architectural Examination of the Levantine Effect in Beyoğlu in the Context of The Sixth Chamber of the Municipality

Overview

“Institutional and Architectural Examination of the Levantine Effect in Beyoğlu in the Context of The Sixth Chamber of the Municipality,” explores the significant influence of the Levantine community on the social, institutional, and architectural transformation of Beyoğlu, a cosmopolitan district of Istanbul during the late Ottoman period. The study highlights how Levantines played a central role in modernizing municipal governance through the Sixth Municipal Department, introducing European-style public services such as street lighting, sanitation, and public transport infrastructure like the Tünel funicular. Architecturally, the Levantines contributed to the district’s transformation into a European-style urban space, incorporating Neo-Classical, Baroque, and Renaissance elements into landmark structures such as the Pera Palace Hotel and the Sixth Municipal Building. However, the study also reveals inequalities in-service distribution, with wealthier Levantine areas benefiting more than poorer neighborhoods. The article provides valuable insights into the enduring legacy of the Levantines in shaping modern Beyoğlu’s urban and cultural identity.
